The Artwork of Cindy Roberts

Palette Knife

I love the texture and energy that a palette knife brings to the painting. I build layers with it by laying on new colors or by glazing thin transparent colors or scumbling, then scraping the surface afterwards with the knife or end of a sharpened brush to bring back other layers of colors.

Oils

I like to use broken color and glazing in my painting as well as using complimentary colors in many passages to bring an optical vibration to the colors.

Pastels

This recent media to me is challenging and has a more immediate application of pigments. Layering thin marks of color allows visual blending and more vibrance in the painting. Loving the experience.

ABstract

I enjoy laying in shapes of color, reacting to the marks that I lay down, rotating my canvas and responding to what I see. I enjoy making large movement with the palette knife, painting from my shoulder, as well as using various knives, tools found in the hardware stores or in my collection of found objects that create interesting marks and texture. I enjoy working with both small and large substrates. I love being drawn into the process of creation.
